Naabot at nahigitan pa ng Department of Tourism (DOT) ang kanilang target na 8.2 milyong turista na bibisita sa Pilipinas noong 2019.
Umabot sa 8.26 milyon ang bilang ng mga banyagang pumunta sa bansa, mas mataas ng 15.24% kumpara noong 2018 na may 7.18 milyon.
“This heralds a new milestone in the country’s tourism history, breaching the eight millionth mark,” ayon kay Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.
“Without a doubt, our convergence programs with other government agencies, particularly in improving access as well as product development and marketing initiatives with local government and private sector have greatly paid off,” aniya pa.
Samantala, sa pagtataya ng DOT, posibleng umabot sa P42.9 bilyon ang mawawala sa industriya ng turismo sa bansa mula Pebrero hanggang Abril ngayong taon dahil sa coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).
Kaya naman nanawagan si Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na paunlarin ang domestic tourism at bumiyahe sa ilang tourist destination sa bansa. (Ray Mark Patriarca)
