ZAMBOANGA CITY — Nagsimula na kahapon ang operasyon ng militar kontra New People’s Army (NPA) sa Mindanao matapos na bawiin ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte ang cease-fire nito sa rebeldeng komunista dahil sa pagpatay ng mga ito sa isang CAFGU militia sa Davao del Norte province.

Hindi naman agad mabatid kung ang anti-insurgency campaign na ipinag-utos ng Eastern Minda­nao Command na naka-base sa Davao City ay makaka-apekto sa formal resumption ng peace talks sa mga rebelde sa Oslo, Norway sa August 20.

“Eastern Mindanao Command has issued a directive for all units to be on high alert and to resume ope­rations against the NPAs consistent with the directive coming from the military chain-of-command. The Eastern Mindanao Command assures our countrymen that it will remain committed to protecting our communities against armed threats and in pursuing peace and development,” ani Major Ezra Balagtey, isang army spokesman.

Ang pagbawi ni Duterte sa ceasefire ay naganap ilang oras bago mag-deklara ng truce ang NPA, a­yon kay Jose Maria Sison, ang founder ng Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).
