Upang maproteksyunan ang mamamayan sa mga supplement at alternative medicines na malayang ibinebenta at ginagamit ng halos kalahati ng populasyon ng Pilipinas, itinutulak na ng isang mambabatas sa Kamara na i-regulate na ito.
Sa kanyang House Bill 1300 o Supplementary Complementary and Alternative Medicine Regulation Act o SCAMRA, sinabi ni San Jose City Del Monte Bulacan Rep. Florida Robes na panahon na para i-regulate ang paggawa, distribusyon at pagbebenta ng mga ganitong uri ng gamot.
“Nowadays, nearly half of our population use some supplementary complementary alternative medicines (SCAM), including dietary supplements,” ani Robes sa kanyang panukala.
Nilinaw ng mambabatas na hindi nito sinasabi na walang halaga ang mga herbal medicines mula sa malunggay, guyabano leaves, turmeric at ginger extract subalit hindi umano dumadaan sa regulasyon ang paggawa nito dahil hindi aprubado ng Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
“In fact, it is being prescribed by people who sometimes are not medical doctors, negligently. Many people are unaware of the potential health risk since most product have not undergone quality control and without FDA approval,” ani Robes.
Malaya rin umanong naibebenta ang mga drug supplement na ito sa mga merkado at dahil nakukumbinsi ang mga tao na nakakagaling ang mga ito at ang iba naman ay nagbebenta sa pamamagitan ng pyramiding.
“Advertisements of these products are misleading, false, unfair and exaggerated. This is further aggravated by the marketing scheme employed by manufacturers, which is known as pyramid as well as their prescriptions by non-medical doctors or health professionals,” ayon pa sa mambabatas.
